Village tour - stop 4, The Bulls Head
We will park the bus on the corner of Woodville
Road and Main Street, but that's OK as we will only be here a few
minutes.
Notice the Bull's Head pub? It's a grade
2 listed building. The main part dates from around 1700 but the
lower part of the structure (between the front and Dethick Hall)
is much older and could date from 1570 to 1600. Today you can get
a great value meal there!
Nos 4 and 6 Manchester lane are also grade
2 listed buildings. Note the timber gable end to the cottages. See
it? Also on Manchester Lane is the Dethick Hall formerly the site
of the old boys school endowed by the Rev Dethick in his will of
1626.
Have a quick look at the Manor House on
Main Street.
See the footpath leading off to the Limehouse
Dams? That's where the water supply came from years ago. The water
from one of the ponds was treated with lime and piped to a small
waterworks on Manchester Lane, just above Slack Lane. The water
was then fed through cast iron pipes to the village with a number
of cast iron markers to indicate the buried pipes. These are marked
'H.W.W.' and one example is near the wall on the road at the side
of the church in Church Street. We will be going past it shortly.
OK, let's go.
