Census

A comprehensive census of population recording names, occupation, ages, birthplaces etc. was taken every 10 years from 1841 to the present. Every one present in a parish is listed wherever they happened to be on census night, including women, children, servants, visitors, lodgers, those in institutions, pedler's , tramps, sailors on ships etc.). Those up to and including 1891 are generally available for research.

Further information is available on the Public Record Office website. The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Days Saints (Mormons) have compiled a CD-Rom index containing information for over 30 million individuals from England, Wales and Scotland.
