Military

The Volunteer Corps of Infantry of County of Derby were formed to combat threat of French invasion in 1803/4. It contained the Brady and Hartshorne Volunteers consisting of 2 companies (Hartshorne and Bretby) and 146 rank and file. It was commanded by the following officers:

Charles Smelt (Captain/Commandant)
Thomas Hassell (Captain)
Francis Blackie (Lieutenant)
William Raven (Lieutenant) of Hartshorne Bulls Head
John Wathnall (Ensign)
Joseph L Hassell (Ensign)
